How to use Merge PDF
Got several PDFs that need to become one? Multiple invoices from different clients, chapter files from a book you're compiling, scanned papers that should have been one document — whatever the reason, combining PDFs into a single ordered document shouldn't require expensive desktop software or creating accounts on sketchy websites.
Our Merge PDF tool lets you select multiple PDF files, arrange them in your preferred order with simple up and down buttons, and merge everything into one clean PDF. All processing runs locally in your browser using the industry-standard pdf-lib library — your files are never uploaded to any server, stored, or shared.
What is Merge PDF?
Merge PDF is a browser-based tool that combines two or more PDF files into a single document. You add files to a list, reorder them with arrow buttons, and click Merge — that's it. Each page from every source PDF is copied byte-for-byte into the output, preserving all original content, formatting, annotations, form fields, and embedded images.
Because we use pdf-lib rather than a server-side approach, there's no file size limit imposed by our infrastructure. The practical limit is your browser's available memory — a typical modern browser can handle combining dozens of standard PDFs without breaking a sweat.
How to Use
- Click the drop zone or drag and drop to select two or more PDF files from your computer. You can also click the zone to open a file picker.
- Use the up and down arrow buttons next to each file name to rearrange the merge order. Files at the top of the list appear first in the output PDF.
- Click the Merge & Download button to start combining. A progress indicator shows you how far along we are.
- Once complete, click Download to save the merged PDF to your device. It keeps all pages in the exact order you specified.
Key Features
- Combine unlimited PDF files (practical limit: browser memory, tested up to 50+ files)
- Visual file list with drag-free reordering via up and down arrow buttons
- Pages copied byte-for-byte — original content, formatting, annotations, and form fields all preserved
- Runs entirely in browser using pdf-lib — no uploads, completely private and secure
- No registration required, no account to create, no watermarks on the output PDF
- Supports both single-file and multi-file selection from the open file picker
- Works on all modern browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge
- Responsive design that adapts to both desktop and mobile screens
Common Use Cases
- Assembling multi-invoice billing packages for a single client — combine June, July, August invoices into one chronological PDF for their accounting team
- Combining book chapters, report sections, or whitepaper parts into one continuous document ready for publishing or sharing
- Merging scanned paper documents that were saved as individual page PDFs — turn 10 individual Scan-001.pdf through Scan-010.pdf files into one coherent 10-page document
- Creating a single PDF from multiple downloaded PDFs for easier sharing via email, cloud storage, or file transfer
- Academic: merging multiple research papers or supplement files for a literature review portfolio
- Legal: combining contract attachments, exhibits, and addendums into one complete filing document
- Personal: merging tax documents, medical records, or school transcripts into organized multi-page files
Examples
Example 1: Invoice-June.pdf (3 pages) + Invoice-July.pdf (4 pages) + Invoice-August.pdf (3 pages) = merged_invoices.pdf (10 pages) with all invoices in chronological order — perfect for sending a quarterly billing package to a client.
Example 2: Chapter1.pdf (2 pages) + Chapter2.pdf (3 pages) + Chapter3.pdf (2 pages) + Appendix.pdf (5 pages) = complete-book.pdf (12 pages) ready for upload to a self-publishing platform or sharing with editors.
Example 3: Four phone-scanned pages of a signed contract (Scan-001.pdf through Scan-004.pdf, 1 page each) merged into a 4-page contract-signed.pdf — just reorder them to match the original page sequence from your scanner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I merge more than 10 files at once?
There is no hard-coded limit — the tool processes every file you add. The practical limit depends on your browser's available memory; standard office PDFs (10 pages or less each) work fine in batches of 50+. If you hit performance issues or crashes, merge in smaller batches, then merge those batches together.
Q: Is the merged PDF identical to the originals?
Yes. Every page is copied byte-for-byte from the source PDFs into the merged document. Page order is exactly what you specified. Annotations, form fields, embedded images, fonts, and all other page-level objects are preserved. The only thing that changes is the PDF's document-level metadata (Title, Author, etc.), which takes its values from the first file you add — you can edit this afterward with our Edit PDF Metadata tool.
Q: Are my PDF files uploaded to any server?
Absolutely not. The pdf-lib JavaScript library processes files directly in your browser's memory. Nothing is sent to our servers, nothing is logged, nothing is stored. Once you close the tab, your files are gone from our perspective entirely — we never saw them.
Q: What if two files have conflicting metadata or page sizes?
Metadata (Title, Author) from the first file in the list is used for the merged document. Page sizes are respected per-page — you can merge a letter-page PDF with an A4-page PDF and each page keeps its original dimensions.
Q: Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
The tool can merge PDFs encrypted with an owner password (restrictions only). PDFs protected with a user/open password cannot be loaded by pdf-lib without the password — you'll need to unlock them first.
Tips for Best Results
- Add files in the order you want them merged, then use the arrows for fine-tuning — it's more efficient than reselecting.
- Close other browser tabs before merging very large or many files to free up memory.
- After merging, consider adding page numbers with our Add Page Numbers tool for easier reference — you can number all pages continuously.
- If you need to split a merged file later, use our Split PDF tool with page ranges or our Delete PDF Pages tool to remove sections.
- The file list order determines output order — name your source files with prefixes (01-invoice, 02-invoice) if you want alphabetical auto-sorting.
